Simple Prepositions

In Italian, the simple prepositions are: di, a, da, in, con, su, per, tra, fra.

  • DI: Possession, origin, topic (Of, from, about)
  • A: Movement to a place, location, indirect object (To, at)
  • DA: Provenance, movement from a place, agent (From, by)
  • IN: Location, movement into a place (In, into)
  • CON: Company, means (With)
  • SU: Position above, topic (On, upon, about)
  • PER: Purpose, crossing, duration (For, through)
  • TRA / FRA: Intermediate position, time ref (Between, among)

Articulated Prepositions

When prepositions (except per, tra, fra) meet a definite article, they merge to form an articulated preposition.

Note: “con” is rarely used articulated (col, coi), “con il”, “con i” is preferred.
