Future Tense

Learn the Futuro Semplice: talking about plans, predictions, and suppositions.

The Simple Future (Futuro Semplice)

The Futuro Semplice is used to talk about what will happen. Interestingly, Italians often use the Present Tense for the near future (Domani vado a Roma), but the Future Tense is essential for plans further away, predictions, and even making guesses about the present!

When to Use the Future Tense

  1. Future Plans (distant future):

    • L’anno prossimo andrò in Giappone. (Next year I will go to Japan.)

  2. Predictions:

    • Domani pioverà. (Tomorrow it will rain.)

  3. Promises:

    • Ti amerò per sempre. (I will love you forever.)

  4. Suppositions (Guessing about the present):

    • “Che ora è?” “Non so, saranno le cinque.” (I don’t know, it must be [will be] 5 o’clock.)
    • “Dov’è Marco?” “Sarà al lavoro.” (He’s probably [will be] at work.)

Conjugation (Regular Verbs)

To form the future, you keep the verb stem but change the characteristic vowel:

  • -ARE verbs change the ‘a’ to ‘e’: parlare → parlerò
  • -ERE verbs keep the ‘e’: credere → crederò
  • -IRE verbs keep the ‘i’: dormire → dormirò

The endings are the same for all three groups!

Note: -ARE verbs are the tricky ones because they change the ‘a’ to ‘e’.

  • Mangiare → mangierò (Keep the i just to soften g/c, wait… actually mangiare drops the i! mangerò)
  • Pagare → pagherò (Add ‘h’ to keep hard sound)
  • Cercare → cercherò (Add ‘h’ to keep hard sound)

Irregular Verbs

Many common verbs have an irregular stem in the future, but they still take the regular endings (-ò, -ai, -à, etc.).

Drop the vowel (Syncope)

These verbs lose the vowel from the infinitive ending.

  • Andare → andr- (andrò, andrai…)
  • Avere → avr- (avrò, avrai…)
  • Dovere → dovr- (dovrò, dovrai…)
  • Potere → potr- (potrò, potrai…)
  • Sapere → sapr- (saprò, saprai…)
  • Vedere → vedr- (vedrò, vedrai…)
  • Vivere → vivr- (vivrò, vivrai…)

Double ‘R’

These verbs double the ‘r’ in the stem.

  • Venire → verr- (verrò, verrai…)
  • Bere → berr- (berrò, berrai…)
  • Volere → vorr- (vorrò, vorrai…)
  • Rimanere → rimarr- (rimarrò, rimarrai…)
  • Tenere → terr- (terrò, terrai…)

Essere (To be) - Irregular

  • Essere → sar- (sarò, sarai, sarà, saremo, sarete, saranno)

Fare, Dare, Stare, Dire

These keep the ‘a’ or ‘i’ of the stem (don’t change like -are verbs).

  • Fare → farò (not ferò!)
  • Dare → darò
  • Stare → starò
  • Dire → dirò

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Changing -ARE stems incorrectly

  • Wrong: Parlarò
  • Right: Parlerò

❌ Forgetting the accent on the last letter (io/lui/lei)

  • Wrong: Parlero (This changes pronunciation completely!)
  • Right: Parlerò

❌ Mixing up irregular stems

  • Wrong: Venerò (from Venire)
  • Right: Verrò
  • Wrong: Volerò (from Volere - Wait, Volerò is “I will fly”! Volare)
  • Right: Vorrò (I will want)
